With strong support from dedicated early members and patrons such as Fred Bishop, Mayor of Alberni, Les Hammer, Mayor of Port Alberni, Meg Trebett, Keitha Adams, W.R.H. Prescott, Margaret Nightengale, nn Thomson, George Clutesi, R. Hilton, and Dorrit McLeod, the Society was incorporated in 1967. The original Directors were Lila Mackenzie, William Jones, Jack Hills, Keitha Adams, and Helen Ford. The first years were spent in the old Army Camp Fire Hall on the corner of Roger St. and 10th Ave. In 1971, the Alberni Valley Museum was established, the Historical Society artifacts and photographs were transferred, and the re-named Society then concentrated on 'paper treasures'. In 1982 the Museum was expanded, making room for the Society's archive collection and volunteer workers. The Museum and the Historical Society continue to work co-operatively to collect, preserve and display extensive collections acquired from local residents, organizations and businesses that reflect the social, political and economic life of our communities. The Alberni District Historical Society has an executive of four table officers and three to seven directors, depends solely on dedicated volunteers, and is registered as a Charitable Society totally funded by tax-receiptable donations and small fees for research or restoration and conservation services.

McLean Mill National Historic Site

Phone: 250-723-1376 or 1-855-866-1376 Address: 5633 Smith Rd. Port Alberni, BC Website: http://www.alberniheritage.com/mclean-mill/welcome-mclean-steam-sawmill Summary:  McLean Mill was operated by R.B. McLean and his three sons from 1926 to 1965. It is a showcase of pioneering get-it-done attitude and inventiveness. The mill is typical of the remote coastal lumber camp and sawmill complex from the middle of the last century and has been named a National Historic Site (1989) to commemorate the history of logging and saw milling in British Columbia. The site is a very complete collection of industrial and personal memories of the people that lived and worked there. Since 1995 and continuing to the present, the site has been restored with funds from Heritage Canada, Forest Renewal BC, the BC Heritage Trust, BC Community Futures, the Regional District of Alberni-Clayoquot and the City of Port Alberni. MacMillan Bloedel donated the land. The sawmill has been rebuilt to operate as it did in 1965, including a replica of a 1928 log carriage. The camp buildings are in the process of being restored and furnished as they were at particular times in their history. Send an Email

With fundraising, leadership and personal development opportunities,  our clubs enable volunteers to help others in ways that no one person could do alone ... and to grow personally in the process. The Port Alberni Kinsmen undertake a wide variety of local fundraising and service projects. Our club operates autonomously when determining how it fund raises and distributes those funds within the local community. The club has taken youth and disabled individuals in need from the community as priority. Through a variety of service projects organized by clubs,  Kin Canada has collectively helped thousands, possibly millions, of people in need. Kin members can proudly say they have contributed more than $1 billion to Canadian communities, including $36 million for cystic fibrosis research and hundreds of  millions for parks, playgrounds and community facilities.
